The average altitude of Lovech is about 200 m above mean sea level. It was founded as a Bulgarian fortress in the Middle Ages over the ruins of a Roman road station and has been known under name Lovech since 12th century. Houses of Renaissance architecture have been preserved in the ancient part of the town, called Varosha. On the place where there was a covered bridge built by Kolyo Ficheto in 1874, nowadays there is a covered iron-concrete bridge with shops along it Lovech is famous for its covered bridge and also for having the second biggest zoo in the country after the one in the capital Sofia. During the battle for independence,the national hero Vasil Levski,a freedom figther,centered his revolutionary organization (BRCC) in Lovech. The village itself has several food stores, shops, cafes, a beautiful church, a school and a cultural centre, a kindergarten, a post office, as well as cable TV supply and mobile phone coverage.
