The lake itself is a zone of national importance in terms of nature and protected bird species. It is an underwater sea valley, separated from the sea by a sand spot. These are the territories of antique Greek colonies and old Thracian cultural settlements. Another attractive lake for hunters and anglers - the Shabla Lake - is located a few kilometres south of Dourankoulak. Looking further afield, the area of Touzlata is located 4 km east of the town. It is well known for its curative mud, which was the main reason to build a balneology centre there beside two lakes, formed by old landslides. A large recreational complex, many villas, bungalows and a camping site can also be found there. There is a mineral spring with temperature of the water above 30C degrees. Two big camping sites - Sandrino Camping and Beliyat Bryag Camping are also located near Shabla. They offer various opportunities for rest and water sports, clubs, bars, numerous bungalows for tourists having no camping equipment, small restaurants and snack bars for seafood and continental food.
The towns of Kavarna and Balchik, also in close proximity, have a lot to expose as well.
