The excellent LAKE VILLAGE villa development is set at the edge of a picturesque village and has stunning views over a lake and mountains. The property is just 700m from the lake and offers a unique combination of peace, water, sun, and fresh mountain air. The village lies just 20km from the glorious capital of the First Bulgarian Kingdom, Veliki Preslav, and 50km from the regional centre Shumen. With its circumference of 100km, Lake Ticha is the second biggest lake in Bulgaria. Its depth reaches 60m at some places and its waters are the home of a great variety of fish, such as carp, Crucian carp, wels catfish, perch etc. and a paradise for anglers too. 12 km away from the lake village is situated one of the biggest hunting centres in Bulgaria. Red deer, roe deer, wild boar, foxes, jackals and wildcats are the most typical representatives of the wildlife inhabiting the territory of the hunting area. Among the finest trophies gained here are the red-deer antlers with a weight of 12.340kg and 236 CIC points. Other attractions include the mountain and spa resort of Varbitsa, the Madara Horseman, and the original capital Pliska. The sea capital Varna and its international airport are just 130km away.
The ruins of Veliki Preslav are scattered over three square kilometers near the banks of the Ticha, and to make sense of them it helps to see the plans and model in the site’s Archaeological Museum. From its store of lapidary and jewellery, the mind’s eye can dress the bare ruins of the Palace where the Tsar held court “in a garment studded with pearls, girt with a purple girdle and a golden sword by his side”, and put a dome on the well-preserved Round Church. Several arches, the bulk of its walls and twelve marble columns (some truncated) still remain. Founded by Khan Omurtag in 821, Veliki Preslav acquired the prefix “Great” after it was made the capital of the First Kingdom, during the reign of Tsar Simeon (893-927) – although it began to eclipse the original capital, Pliska, at an earlier date. According to John the Exarch’s Shestodnev, C10 Veliki Preslav was the most populous town in the Balkans, with extensive suburbs surrounding a walled inner town containing “large buildings of stone on both sides, decorated with wood’. It also held a Palace, a royal School of Translators, the Patriarchate and other ‘churches ornamented with stones, wood and paintings, marble and copper, silver and gold’.
